The FIFA website had an interesting quote which said that South Africa had the home advantage but Uruguay had the team advantage and that’s exactly how the match turned out with South Africa getting a 3-0 drubbing from Uruguay.
The stadium at Pretoria was packed to capacity and the home crowd clearly got behind their team and supported them almost to the very end. However, it was a rude awakening for the home side as they got a lesson in how international football should be played.
Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez were simply outstanding for Uruguay. Forlan scored his first goal in the 24th minute and would later score his second goal in the 79th minute through a penalty kick, after South African goal keeper was sent off for fouling Suarez.
The South African defense were tested repeated by the men from Uruguay and they were found wanting. To make things even worse, towards the end of stoppage time, Suarez sent in a lofted pass and Alvaro Pereira headed the ball in to complete a 3-0 victory.
With this loss, the South Africans are in real danger of being one of the first teams to be sent out of the tournament. As they walked off the field, the South Africans looked very much like a defeated team.
South African fans blew their vuvuzelas in a desperate bid to cheer their team and lift their spirits but in the end the Uruguayans proved to be a little too powerful and skillful for the hosts to beat.
A lot will depend on how their players cope with this crushing defeat and how well they can bounce back. Their next match is against France and they have to win in order to have any chance of progressing to the next round.
The South Africans clearly do not have the star power to pose a serious threat to any of the other teams. They will have to dig deep to find the inspiration to come out and play better football during their next game.
With this victory, Uruguay goes up to 4 points and currently leads the points table and is in a good position to advance to the second round. The Uruguayan coach will be delighted with this victory and will be hoping that Forlan and Suarez can build more momentum as the tournament progresses.
If France plays well and wins their next two games, South Africa will most likely be out of this tournament.
