Spain Humiliated by the Swiss PDF Print E-mail

The experts predicted that Spain would not only win this game but they would crush the Swiss and no one had any problem believing their predictions as the Spaniards are one of the favourites to win this year’s 2010 World Cup.

But it wasn’t to be as they went down to the Swiss 1-0, who caused one of the biggest upsets in the history of the world cup. Spain started extremely well dominating the first 8 minutes of the match and had complete possession of the ball. One of the commentators remarked sarcastically that if this continues, the Swiss would have to be introduced to the Adidas Jabulani ball at half time.

The trend continued throughout the first half and the Spaniards were in full control but were unable to penetrate the Swiss defense. The first half ended with both sides failing to score.

However, early into the second half, Gelson Fernandes managed to score for the Swiss after beating Casillas twice. The Spaniards were stunned and for the first time realized that they could be defeated.

I got the feeling that Spain was over confident and underestimated the Swiss team. This proved to be their undoing. For me, Spain’s captain Casillas did not seem to be fully involved in the game. He was either in shock with the initial goal or he had something on his mind that prevented him from playing like he usually does.

David Villa did not pose a threat to the Swiss defense and with star striker Fernando Torres sitting on the bench, Spain were clearly on the back foot. Spain’s coach Vicente del Bosque was forced to play his trump card during the second half and he brought on Torres who is recovering from injury.

Torres did create a few chances but his current form shows that he is clearly not at his best. Torres looked rusty and needs more match practice. The Spaniards even got an extra 5 minutes of extra time but were still unable to convert and even the score.

Ottmar Hitzfeld , The former European Championship and current Swiss coach must be given full credit for the win. The Swiss have played Spain 18 times in the past and have never won a game. They must be extremely delighted to pick up their first win against Spain in the first round of the world cup.

With this win, the Swiss are now on 3 points along with Chile, while Spain and Honduras remain on 0.
