After a draw in their first game, everyone expected England to come out and beat the Algerian team and get their first points on the board. The match started with the commentators posing the question “Can Algeria do to England what Switzerland did to Spain?”
Algeria may not have won the game but they managed to hold England to a goalless draw. In their last match, all the criticism was directed at goalkeeper Robert Green who was replaced by David James for this match. Now, it appears that the entire squad will come under scrutiny after a poor showing in both games.
The England squad was expected to achieve great results at the world cup, yet they have been unable to win their games against the USA and Algeria, which must be thoroughly disappointing for all their fans.
England have a star studded team with the likes of Rooney, Lampard and Gerrard, but none of them played to potential. They were unable to beat the Algerian defense and looked flat during most of the match.
English manager, Fabio Capello will be a worried man. He knows that if his team fails to win their next game on Wednesday against Slovenia, they could very well be going back home and he will get a lot of criticism coming his way.
They were definitely missing the services of David Beckham who in the past controlled the midfield and created brilliant opportunities with his delightful passes for Rooney and Owen in the past. Currently, Rooney is not being given enough opportunities and has to go back into the midfield just to get the ball. He is now under more pressure to score for England and convert the few chances that he gets.
Algeria on the other hand played a great game. Karim Ziani, played extremely well in the midfield and created several opportunities for Nadir Belhadj. If both of them play well against the USA, the Americans will end up on the losing side.
England has to win their game against Slovenia to be assured a place in the next round. Even if they do get through, Capello really needs to rethink his strategy and find someone who can partner Rooney upfront. Emile Heskey has looked good but there does not seem to be much of an understanding between him and Rooney and Capello has to get his attack right for England to progress as their biggest problem as of now is their lack of ability to score!
