After losing their first match, Cameron needed a win against Denmark on Saturday to keep their World Cup dreams alive. Cameron’s captain Samuel Eto took advantage of a defensive error from Christian Poulsen and scored in the 10th minute to give Cameron a 1-0 lead.
Cameron and Denmark were the bottom two teams in Group E and nobody expected much from this match. However, it turned out to be a closely contested game with both teams fighting till the very end.
Denmark equalized in the first half when Nicklas Bendtner scored in the 32nd minute to make the score 1-1. Cameron came back strong in the second half and it looked like they would score but for some reason, they were unable to convert their chances.
For Cameron, this game was a huge improvement when compared to their opening game against Japan. But in the end it was Dennis Rommedahl who scored in the 60th minute and gave Denmark a 2-1 lead.
Assou-Ekotto have not played well in both their games for Cameron and that’s one of the reasons why Cameron’s defense has been easy to beat. With two losses in two games, they are now officially the first team to be eliminated from the world cup.
Captain Samuel Eto must be a disappointed man. Just minutes after the game, Eto told reporters that “"This was a great opportunity to do something big but it wasn't to be. God is the only one who rules in this moment and he wanted it to turn out like this".
Whenever a team exists early from the world cup, the respective coaches come under immense pressure and often end up resigning. Cameron’s coach Le Guen however said he had no plans of resigning even though his team was eliminated.
Le Guen was reported to have said that “Whilst my contract is running I'll do my very best for the Cameroonian football federation. I hope they will defend the national colours of the team."
Denmark’s coach will be hoping that Bendtner and Rommedahl join forces and play to potential when they take on Japan in their final Group E match. If they do, Denmark should be able to beat Japan, who are currently on 3 points as well.
The Netherlands with 6 points on the board, have now qualified for the next round. The winner of the Denmark vs. Japan game will advance with the Netherlands to the round of 16.
