Spain played a stylish game against the Chileans and ended up winning 2-1 to top their group. After their first round loss to Switzerland, the Spaniards have come back in style and both their star players have been making an impact.
Although Fernando Torres is yet to score in this world cup, he is slowly coming back to form and will definitely be a threat to Portugal who are Spain’s next opponents in the round of 16. It was David Villa who opened the score for Spain and gave them a 1-0 lead. The Spaniards dominated the game and played some exciting football. Their second goal came from Andres Iniesta who was declared fit enough to play against Chile. Both goals were exceptional and gave fans something to cheer about, after a boring Brazil vs. Portugal draw.
Chile were reduced to 10 men after Marco Estrada got cautioned twice for tackling Fernando Torres. Yet, the Chileans held on and restricted Spain from going on the rampage. Chile managed to score through Rodrigo Milla and go 2-1. They fought hard to try and equalize but they were unable to penetrate the Spanish defense for a second goal.
Spain’s coach Vicente del Bosque said that “There's a lot of pressure in the World Cup. We know what people expect in Spain and we're trying to give our all. Let's see what we achieve”
Bosque also confirmed that Fernando Torres who was substituted early in the second half would play in the game against Portugal. He told reporters that he only took precautionary measures to safeguard Torres who felt a spot of muscular bother during the game.
Chile have also qualified for the round of 16 and will now take on Brazil on Tuesday. Chile’s coach Marcelo Bielsa was happy with the result and made no apologies for his squad’s aggressive tactics. He told reporters that “We are not a team that plays tough but we do try to get the ball back quickly. But Spain are different. They move the ball very well and we were simply too late to get it. But I don't think we used force excessively. We didn't have bad intentions”.
Chile will have to play brilliantly on Monday to beat football giants Brazil who were held to a goalless draw against Portugal. Chilean’s mid-fielder Arturo Vidal said that “We know Brazil are candidates for the title but we have our qualities too.”
