Germany vs. Argentina was one of the most anticipated games of the world cup and worthy of being a final. This was yet another match that the experts predicted would go down to the wire and end up in a penalty shootout but it wasn’t to be. Argentina suffered their worst world cup defeat in 52 years and went down 4-0 to Germany.
Germany came out firing on all cylinders and they scored in the 3rd minute through Mueller. Schweinsteiger took a free kick that sent the ball curling into the goal. Mueller was left unmarked and had no problems putting in a superb header to give Germany a 1-0 lead.
The first half ended with the score on 1-0 and it was up to the Argentineans to raise their game in the second half. They came out and played an attacking game for the first 20 minutes and created many scoring opportunities but were unable to penetrate the tight Germany defense.
Germany got their second goal through Klose in the 67th minute and with a 2-0 scoreline, Argentina looked completely demoralized. Diego Maradona who has been pumped up and full of energy in previous games looked defeated and knew his side was about to crash out of the world cup.
For Germany, Schweinsteiger was at his best controlling the midfield and creating opportunities regularly for his strikers. He put in a superb run and made a deft pass that allowed Friedrich to score his first goal for Germany giving them a 3-0 lead.
It was all over for Argentina but Klose who was playing his 100th match for his country was not finished. He scored his second goal during the final moments of the match and gave Germany an astounding 4-0 scoreline.
Germany completely outplayed Argentina and their only blemish was the fact that Mueller received a yellow card for a hand ball, which means he misses the semifinals as this was his second consecutive yellow card in two games.
Messi was a disappointment yet again and leaves the tournament without scoring. Tevez told reporters “There's nothing we can say about their win. To lose like that is very painful. We played badly and sometimes when you make mistakes you go home. They did what we knew they were capable of doing. We knew they could be dangerous on set-pieces and on the counter-attack.”
When Diego Maradona was asked if he was going to resign, he said “I may leave tomorrow. I'll have to think carefully about it and talk with my family and the players.”
